The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety switch for the AMH81005CNBB gas furnace and compatible Goodman/Amana models. Mounted on the heat-exchanger/plenum bulkhead, the primary limit continuously monitors supply-air temperature. If the furnace overheats — most commonly from a dirty filter, closed registers, a failed blower, or restricted ductwork — the control opens to de-energize the gas valve and protect the heat exchanger from thermal damage. It is the furnace's principal over-temperature safety device.
OEM vs. Generic: The genuine Goodman 20162904 is factory-set to the precise cut-out and cut-in temperatures for this furnace and uses the correct probe/insertion length and mounting flange. A generic control with a different setpoint or probe depth can short-cycle the furnace on limit or allow the heat exchanger to overheat. As a critical safety and heat-exchanger protection component, the OEM part is strongly recommended.
Install difficulty: Moderate (3/5). Turn off power and gas, photograph and disconnect the wiring, remove the two mounting screws, and withdraw the sensing element from the airstream. Install the replacement in the identical orientation and insertion depth, then reconnect. Always address the root cause of overheating (replace the filter, verify blower operation, and check airflow) before restoring the furnace to service.
