The Goodman 20162904 primary limit temperature control is the main high-limit safety switch for the Amana/Goodman AMEC800803BXAB gas furnace. Mounted on the heat exchanger or blower deck, it constantly monitors supply-air temperature and shuts off the gas valve if the furnace overheats — protecting the heat exchanger and preventing a fire hazard when airflow is restricted by a dirty filter, blocked ductwork, or a failed blower. A furnace that fires briefly then shuts down, or that short-cycles on heat, is often signaling a faulty primary limit.
The genuine Goodman OEM control is factory-calibrated to the trip and reset temperatures specified for this furnace. Generic limit switches may carry a different temperature rating or mounting footprint, which can lead to nuisance trips or, worse, a switch that opens too late. For a safety-rated component we recommend the exact OEM part.
Easy to Moderate. Turn off power at the disconnect, note the wiring, remove the two mounting screws, transfer the terminals to the new switch, and reinstall in the same orientation. Most DIYers with basic tools can complete this in under 30 minutes.
Always disconnect power before servicing. If the new limit trips repeatedly, diagnose airflow and blower operation before assuming a bad part.
