The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety device for AMVM970603BNAA modulating variable-speed gas furnaces. Mounted on the heat-exchanger/blower bulkhead, the primary limit continuously monitors supply-air temperature and cuts the gas valve if the furnace overheats — the classic symptom of restricted airflow from a dirty filter, blocked returns, or a failing blower. Unlike a rollout switch, the primary limit is an auto-reset control that re-closes once temperatures normalize, but repeated tripping (short-cycling on limit) signals an airflow problem that must be addressed.
The trip temperature and disc diameter of a primary limit are matched to a specific furnace. This genuine OEM control guarantees the correct set point and mounting footprint, whereas a mismatched generic can cause chronic nuisance shutdowns or mask a real overheating condition.
Moderate. Remove the blower-compartment panel, disconnect two leads, and replace the two mounting screws — 15–25 minutes. Cut power and gas first, and verify airflow is unobstructed before returning the furnace to service.
