The 20162901 is a genuine Goodman primary high-limit switch designed as a direct-fit replacement for the VCSS960402BNAA gas furnace and compatible models. This thermally activated safety control monitors heat-exchanger temperature and shuts off the burners if the furnace overheats — typically from restricted airflow, a dirty filter, or blower failure. When the limit trips repeatedly or fails open, the furnace won't fire; a failed or out-of-spec limit is a common no-heat cause.
The OEM Goodman limit switch is calibrated to the exact trip and reset temperatures Goodman specifies for this heat exchanger, and its bracket matches the factory mounting location. Generic limits with different setpoints can nuisance-trip or, worse, fail to protect the furnace. For a life-safety component, the factory-calibrated OEM switch is the right call.
Moderate — Disconnect power, remove the two mounting screws and wiring connectors, and install the new switch in the same orientation. About 20–30 minutes with basic tools. If the old limit was tripping, diagnose the underlying airflow issue before returning the unit to service.
