The Goodman 20162901 Primary Limit Switch is a genuine OEM high-limit temperature control for the AMH80403AXBC gas furnace and compatible Goodman/Amana models. Mounted on the heat-exchanger bulkhead, the primary limit monitors supply-air temperature and shuts off the burners if the furnace overheats — typically from a dirty filter, failed blower, or restricted airflow. This is an auto-reset control that re-closes once temperature returns to normal. A failed limit can cause short-cycling on the burners or a furnace that won't fire at all.
The genuine OEM 20162901 is matched to the exact trip temperature and mounting-bracket geometry of your furnace's heat exchanger. Generic limits with a different setpoint or footprint can nuisance-trip, mount incorrectly, or fail to protect the exchanger. For a primary safety limit, OEM calibration is essential.
Disconnect power, photograph the wiring, remove the two mounting screws, transfer the spade terminals, and secure the new switch to the bulkhead. About 15 minutes. If the old limit was tripping, correct the underlying airflow problem — replace the filter and confirm blower operation — before restarting.
Always disconnect power and gas before servicing. Repeated limit trips indicate an airflow fault that should be diagnosed by a licensed HVAC technician.
