The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM safety and operating control for the AMVC800804CXAA two-stage variable-speed 80% AFUE gas furnace. Mounted on the heat-exchanger bulkhead, the primary limit continuously senses supply-air temperature. It closes the gas valve if the plenum overheats — typically from restricted airflow, a dirty filter, or a failed blower — protecting the heat exchanger from cracking and preventing a fire hazard. It also coordinates blower operation on temperature.
The primary limit must trip at a factory-specified temperature matched to this furnace's cabinet and airflow design. The OEM 20162904 carries the correct set point and mounting footprint. A generic limit with a different cut-out temperature can either fail to protect the heat exchanger or short-cycle the furnace on the limit. For a heat-exchanger safety control, OEM is the right choice.
Disconnect power and gas, unplug the wiring, remove the mounting screws, and install the new 20162904 in the identical position and orientation so the sensing element reads plenum temperature correctly. If the old limit was tripping, a technician should first correct the airflow restriction that caused the overheat.
