The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety for AMS80604BXAA 80% AFUE furnaces and compatible Goodman/Amana models. Mounted on the heat exchanger bulkhead, the primary limit monitors supply-air temperature and opens the gas/ignition circuit if the furnace overheats — typically caused by restricted airflow such as a dirty filter, blocked returns, or a failing blower. This auto-reset control closes again once temperatures return to normal, protecting the heat exchanger from thermal damage.
The OEM Goodman limit control is set to the exact trip temperature and insertion depth engineered for this cabinet, so it protects the furnace without shutting down prematurely. Generic snap-discs may share a rating but differ in probe length and calibration. Because this is a primary safety device, the OEM part is the recommended choice.
Easy. The control is retained by two screws and quick-connect terminals. Shut off power and gas, photograph the wiring, and install the new control in the same orientation and depth. Estimated time: 15–25 minutes. If the limit trips repeatedly, correct the airflow restriction rather than replacing the part alone.
