The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is the main auto-reset high-limit switch for the AMH950453BXAF gas furnace. Mounted on the heat-exchanger bulkhead, it senses supply-air temperature and opens the control circuit if the furnace overheats — protecting the heat exchanger and blower from damage caused by dirty filters, closed registers, or blower failure. Unlike a manual-reset rollout switch, the primary limit resets automatically once temperatures return to a safe range, restoring normal heating.
This OEM control is calibrated to the precise open/close temperatures Goodman specified for this cabinet and heat exchanger, and it mounts on the original bracket with the correct insertion depth. Generic limits with a different setpoint or probe length can nuisance-trip on normal operation or, dangerously, fail to open when needed. For the primary safety limit, always use OEM.
Easy–Moderate (2.5/5). A confident DIYer can complete this in about 20–30 minutes: cut power, remove the blower-door and control access, disconnect the two leads, remove the mounting screws, and install the replacement at the same depth. If the new limit trips repeatedly, correct the underlying airflow restriction rather than defeating the switch.
