The 20162904 primary limit temperature control is a genuine Goodman/Amana high-limit switch for the AMEC960302BNAB gas furnace. Mounted on the heat-exchanger / plenum, it continuously senses supply-air temperature and cuts power to the gas valve if the furnace overheats — typically the result of restricted airflow from a dirty filter, blocked ducts, or a failing blower. This auto-reset control re-closes once temperatures return to a safe range, protecting the heat exchanger from thermal damage.
The genuine OEM control carries the factory-calibrated trip and reset temperatures matched to this furnace's heat exchanger. Generic limits with the wrong setpoint cause short-cycling or, worse, fail to protect the heat exchanger. For a primary safety limit, OEM calibration is essential.
Moderate. Turn off power and gas, document wiring, remove the mounting screws, and install the new control in the same orientation. About 30 minutes. Correct any underlying airflow restriction that caused repeated trips.
