The orifice threads into the gas manifold and meters the precise flow of natural gas into each in-shot burner. Its drill size sets the BTU input and the air/fuel ratio, so using the exact factory orifice is essential for clean combustion, proper flame color, and rated efficiency. Damaged threads, an enlarged bore from cleaning with wire, or the wrong drill size will throw off the burn.
Orifice bore is drilled to a specific number for this furnace's rated input and local altitude assumptions. A generic orifice with a different drill size changes the firing rate and can cause sooting, rollout, or under-firing.
