High-efficiency condensing furnaces produce acidic condensate that must be routed safely away from the heat exchanger and inducer; this trap holds a water seal that lets condensate drain while blocking flue gases from being pulled back into the cabinet. A cracked, clogged, or missing trap is a common cause of pressure-switch lockouts and nuisance shutdowns.
