As a condensing furnace, the AMVM97 produces acidic condensate that must drain freely; this trap maintains the water seal that lets condensate exit while blocking flue-gas backflow. A cracked, clogged, or degraded trap is a common cause of pressure-switch faults and water leaks under the furnace.
