The Goodman 20162903 is an OEM primary high-limit switch rated at 150°F for VMSS960403ANAA 96% furnaces. Mounted on the heat-exchanger bulkhead, it monitors supply-air temperature and opens the burner circuit if the furnace overheats — typically from restricted airflow such as a clogged filter, closed registers, or a failing blower. Once the temperature drops back into range, the switch resets and normal heating resumes, protecting the heat exchanger from thermal stress and cracking.
The OEM 20162903 is set to the exact 150°F trip point Goodman engineered for this furnace, with the correct bracket and terminal layout. A generic switch with a different set point can shut the furnace down prematurely or allow it to overheat. For a temperature-safety control, the genuine OEM part is the safe choice.
Easy–Moderate (2/5). Cut power to the furnace, unplug the two spade terminals, remove the mounting screws, and install the replacement in the same orientation. If the old switch was tripping, correct the airflow restriction before returning the unit to service.
