The Goodman 20162903 primary limit switch is a factory-calibrated 150°F high-temperature safety control for the Amana AMES960805CUAB gas furnace. Mounted on the heat exchanger or blower deck, it continuously monitors supply-air temperature and opens the 24V control circuit to shut off the gas burners if the furnace overheats — protecting the heat exchanger from cracking and preventing a potential fire hazard. When temperatures return to a safe range, the switch automatically resets and normal heating resumes.
Limit switches are a life-safety component, so exact trip temperature and mounting geometry matter. This OEM Goodman switch is factory-set to open at precisely 150°F. Generic aftermarket switches may trip early (causing nuisance short-cycling) or late (allowing dangerous overheating). Installing the specified OEM part ensures correct furnace lockout behavior and warranty compliance.
Rating: Easy (2/5). Turn off power at the disconnect, disconnect the two spade terminals, remove the mounting screws, and swap in the new switch in the same orientation. Most techs and handy homeowners complete this in about 10–15 minutes. If the furnace is tripping repeatedly, inspect airflow (dirty filter, blocked coil) before assuming the switch has failed.
