Yes, it works well for checking suction line and liquid line surface temperatures. For precise superheat/subcooling calculations, a pipe clamp thermocouple is more accurate.
Why are my readings different from a contact thermometer?
IR thermometers read surface temperature and are affected by surface emissivity. Shiny copper pipes will read lower than actual. For best accuracy on pipes, wrap a piece of electrical tape on the pipe and measure the tape.
Can I check duct temperatures with this?
Yes, it is excellent for quick supply and return air temperature checks at registers. Point at the register from 12 inches away for accurate readings.
Is -58°F to 1022°F enough range for HVAC work?
