The transformer reduces incoming 208/230V line voltage to the 24V control voltage that powers the contactor coil, thermostat circuit, and low-voltage controls. The included 24V barrier safely isolates the low-voltage terminals from line voltage inside the control box. When a transformer fails — usually from a shorted thermostat wire, a stuck contactor drawing excess current, or simple age — the entire low-voltage control circuit goes dead: the contactor won't pull in, the thermostat loses power, and the system won't run. A 40VA transformer supplies ample capacity for the contactor and standard control loads on this unit.
