It converts the unit's 208/230V line voltage down to the 24V needed to run the thermostat, control board, relays, and safety circuits. A failed transformer takes the whole low-voltage system offline — the thermostat goes blank, the blower and compressor never energize, and there is no 24V between R and C. Common causes include a shorted thermostat wire, a shorted or stuck contactor coil drawing excess current, or simple age and heat fatigue that opens the internal winding or thermal fuse.
