The transformer steps down line voltage of 208/230V down to the 24V low-voltage power that runs the thermostat, control board, contactor coil, and relays. When a transformer fails, the entire 24V control circuit goes dead — the thermostat screen blanks out, the blower and heat/cool won't energize, and the system appears completely unresponsive even though high-voltage power is present. A buzzing, scorched, or visibly burned transformer is a sure sign of failure, often caused by a shorted control wire or a stuck contactor coil.
