It steps down 208/230V line voltage to the 24V low-voltage power that drives the thermostat, control board, contactor coil, and relays. A failed transformer takes the entire 24V control circuit offline — the thermostat goes dark, the blower and heating/cooling won't energize, and the system seems completely dead even with high-voltage power present. Buzzing, overheating, or a scorched/burned body signals failure, usually caused by a shorted control wire or a stuck coil drawing excess current.

Installation Guide
