Overview

The transformer steps the line-voltage 208/230V primary down to a 24V secondary, supplying low-voltage power to the thermostat, fan coil control board, relays, and contactor coils. When a transformer fails, the entire low-voltage control circuit goes dead: the thermostat screen blanks, the system won't respond to a heat or cool call, and you may notice a burnt odor or a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board. A shorted or overheating transformer can also cause intermittent operation as it drops out under load. Rated at 40VA, it provides ample capacity to drive the air handler's controls without nuisance dropouts.
