The electrode generates the high-voltage spark that lights the burner gas at the start of each heat cycle and, in many designs, also serves as the flame-sensing rod that proves the burner has lit. A worn, cracked, or carboned electrode causes hard starts, repeated ignition lockouts, or a furnace that lights then drops out when flame is not confirmed.
