The hot surface igniter (HSI) is energized by the control board at the start of each heat cycle; it heats to roughly 1,800–2,500°F to ignite the gas at the burners. Because it is a brittle silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride element, it is one of the most common furnace failure points — it degrades with every ignition cycle and eventually cracks or loses the ability to reach ignition temperature.
