On a call for heat, the control board energizes the igniter, which glows red-hot to light the burners before the gas valve opens. Hot surface igniters are fragile and degrade with every cycle — the silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride element eventually cracks or thins until it can no longer reach ignition temperature, producing a no-heat / no-ignition fault.
