Overview

The hot surface igniter is the component that glows red-hot on a heat call and lights the burner gas. When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, which heats to roughly 1,800–2,500°F within a few seconds; once the flame sensor confirms ignition, the board cuts power to the igniter. Because the silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride element is brittle and cycles through extreme thermal stress on every heat call, it is one of the most frequently replaced furnace components.
