Overview

On a call for heat, the control board sends voltage to the igniter, heating its element to a glowing temperature that ignites the gas as the valve opens. Hot surface igniters are brittle and consumable — they crack, develop hairline fractures, or simply lose the ability to reach ignition temperature over thousands of heating cycles.
