On every call for heat, the control board energizes the igniter; it glows orange-hot and lights the burners. Hot surface igniters are the most common furnace failure point because the brittle silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride element degrades with each heating cycle and eventually cracks. A failed igniter leaves you with a furnace that runs the inducer and blower but never produces flame.
