The hot surface igniter (HSI) glows red-hot on a call for heat to ignite the gas at the burners. It is one of the most common furnace failure points: the brittle silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride element cracks from thermal cycling, vibration, or contamination, leaving the furnace unable to light. Symptoms include no ignition, repeated lockouts, clicking with no flame, or a furnace that runs the inducer and then shuts down.
