In heating mode the outdoor coil accumulates frost; the defrost board monitors elapsed run time and coil temperature, then commands the reversing valve, shuts the outdoor fan, and energizes auxiliary heat to clear the ice before returning to normal heating. A failed defrost board is a leading cause of an iced-over outdoor coil, poor heating performance, a unit stuck in defrost, or a heat pump that never defrosts at all.
