Overview

In heating mode, frost builds on the outdoor coil; the defrost board monitors time and coil temperature, then initiates a defrost cycle — energizing the reversing valve, shutting off the outdoor fan, and bringing on auxiliary heat — to melt the ice and restore efficiency. A failed board can leave the outdoor coil iced over (killing heating capacity), run constant or no defrost cycles, or fail to control the reversing valve and fan correctly.
