It is a temperature-sensing bimetal snap-disc switch that energizes the compressor crankcase heater whenever the outdoor ambient drops, protecting the compressor from refrigerant migration and liquid slugging on cold-weather start-up. The "75/55" rating means the contacts make and break across the 55°F–75°F band so the heater only runs when it is actually needed.
