This OEM definite-purpose contactor is the electrically-controlled switch that energizes the compressor and condenser fan motor in your ICP RHS183S0AA0AAAA heat pump. When the thermostat calls for cooling or heating, the 24-volt control circuit pulls in the contactor coil, closing the line-voltage contacts and starting the outdoor unit. Available as a 2-pole 30-amp (OEM 1171554) or 3-pole 40-amp (OEM 1172449) device with a 24V coil, this is one of the most common failure points in any outdoor condensing unit. Pitted, burned, or chattering contacts cause hard starts, intermittent cooling, or a unit that hums but will not run. A coil that fails open leaves the system completely dead even though the thermostat is calling.
