When the thermostat calls for cooling, the 24V coil energizes and the contactor closes its line-voltage contacts to start the compressor. Offered here are the 2-pole 30 amp contactor (part 1171554) and the 3-pole 40 amp contactor (part 1172449), each with a 24V control coil. Contactors are high-wear components: their contacts pit, burn, and weld over thousands of cycles, and the coil can fail open.
