It steps 208/240V line voltage down to a stable 24V that drives the contactor coil, reversing valve solenoid, defrost control board, and thermostat circuit. Rated at 40VA, it provides the current headroom needed for every accessory load on the unit. A failed transformer kills the entire control side — the contactor will not energize, the compressor and outdoor fan stay off, and the thermostat can go dark.
