A contactor is the high-voltage switch that energizes the compressor and condenser fan motor whenever the 24V control circuit calls for cooling or heating. When the contactor fails, the outdoor unit will either stop running entirely or buzz, chatter, and weld its contacts shut so the system runs continuously.
